In the world of additive manufacturing, every print counts. At M Aerospace RTC, where precision and quality are essential, we understand that errors in 3D printing are not only inevitable but also opportunities for learning. Today, we want to share some of the most common failures in 3D printing that we have faced (and overcome), as well as the strategies we use to ensure flawless results.
Warping of the Model
What is it? Warping occurs when the corners of the printed model detach from the print bed, causing distortions that ruin the desired geometry.
Common Causes:
Poor adhesion to the bed
Incorrect temperatures of the hotend or bed
Drafts or premature cooling of the material
How We Solve It: At M Aerospace RTC, we use beds with specialized surfaces and carefully control ambient temperature. Additionally, we perform preliminary tests with each new filament to adjust optimal printing parameters.
Layer Shifting
What is it? Layer shifting results in a “twisted” piece or misaligned layers. This can completely compromise the functionality of the piece.
Common Causes:
Mechanical failures in the X or Y axis
Miscalibrated stepper motors
Printing speed that is too high
Our Solution: We have a rigorous preventive maintenance process for our equipment. We monitor belt tension, check lubrication of the axes, and conduct movement tests before each production series.
Extrusion Problems: Under-Extrusion and Over-Extrusion
What is it? Under-extrusion results in thin layers or visible gaps, while over-extrusion produces excess material and rough surfaces.
Common Causes:
Incorrect diameter of the filament
Partially clogged nozzles
Incorrect flow or steps configuration of the extruder
What We Do Differently: We perform meticulous calibration of the extruder before each new project. We also use certified filaments with strict tolerances and conduct extrusion tests for each roll of material.
At M Aerospace RTC and 3D MX Manufacturing, we believe that every mistake is an opportunity for improvement.
Our focus is on precision, but also on prevention. By identifying the root causes of each failure and applying systematic solutions, we maintain the highest quality standards in every 3D print.
